Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth conducts purge of senior military leaders

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has overseen a significant restructuring of the U.S. military leadership since taking office in January 2025. Reports indicate that more than 80 senior generals and admirals—approximately 10 percent of the military’s top-ranking officers—have been dismissed, forced into early retirement, or had their promotions blocked.

Critics and military officials suggest these actions are part of an effort to align the armed forces with specific political and ideological views rather than job performance. The purge has reportedly disproportionately affected Black, Latino, and female officers. Hegseth has also replaced three top judge advocates general (JAG) officers and implemented new media policies that have limited news media access to the Pentagon.

Additional measures include the administration of polygraph tests to 50 high-ranking officers and staff during investigations into alleged leaks. The leadership changes have caused significant friction within the Department of Defense, contributing to the resignation of U.S. Army Secretary Dan Driscoll in late August.
