Defqon. 1 Festival Cancelled After Historic Code Red Heat Warning in the Netherlands

The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a historic Code Red heat warning on 26 June 2026, the first ever for extreme temperatures in the country. Forecasts called for 36‑39 °C across much of the Netherlands, prompting emergency services, police, fire, ProRail and Rijkswaterstaat to advise authorities.

Hard‑style organiser Q‑dance had already reduced attendance by allowing only weekend‑ticket holders on Friday and Saturday, cutting roughly 15 000 visitors per day. After the Code Red alert, the organisers announced the complete cancellation of the remaining festival programme. The camping area and essential facilities remained open on Friday to let the tens of thousands of “Weekend Warriors” arrange safe travel home. All tickets will be fully refunded and further compensation details will be released later.

The sudden shutdown caused unrest among some attendees; police used dogs and barriers to control crowds as a few tried to re‑enter the site. Organisers praised the cooperation of the community in helping dismantle stages and clear the grounds. The decision highlighted the growing challenge extreme weather poses to large outdoor events.
