Heatwave peaks, extreme temps & drought restrictions
Entities: Belgium · Netherlands · Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) · Frank Duboccage
Overview
The Dutch heatwave that began in late June has progressed from moderate summer warmth to a severe, multi‑day event. After the National Heat Plan was re‑activated on 10 July, temperatures rose steadily, with forecasts warning that southerly winds could carry hot African air into the Netherlands, potentially reaching 34‑40 °C. Water‑use restrictions were imposed: the Twentekanaal was closed to shipping and all irrigation extraction halted, while authorities expanded cooling‑centre capacity and advised the public to stay hydrated and limit outdoor activity.
By late July, model updates confirmed the escalation, predicting temperatures up to 36 °C and a perceived heat stress of 51 °C in parts of Zwolle—far above the 41 °C threshold for extreme risk. The drought has persisted, keeping river levels low and heightening wildfire danger, especially as large fires continue in France and Spain. Experts have added practical guidance for homeowners, recommending the relocation of garden plants to shade, watering during cooler periods, and the use of shade structures.
Rain is expected later in the week, but the outlook remains for continued dry, hot conditions after the weekend, sustaining the region’s heightened heat and fire risk. Municipalities continue to evaluate extended terrace hours, additional cooling‑spot locations, and preparations for a dedicated long‑term heat plan slated for 2027.
