Dejan Bodiroga to run in Serbian elections with student movement party
Dejan Bodiroga, the president of the Euroleague and a basketball legend, has announced his candidacy for the upcoming Serbian parliamentary elections scheduled for October 25. He is running with a new political party formed by a student movement that emerged following the tragic railway station roof collapse in Novi Sad, which resulted in 16 deaths.
The student movement, which began as protests against government corruption, has transitioned into a formal political organization. The party's candidate list includes approximately 250 figures with no prior political background, such as physician Ilija Srdanović, former National Bank of Serbia governor Dejan Šoškić, and various academics and artists. The group is expected to be a significant challenger to the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS).
Bodiroga's entry into politics raises questions regarding his ability to simultaneously manage his leadership role at the Euroleague and his new political responsibilities in Serbia.
