Serbian political parties finalize election coalitions

As the October 25 extraordinary parliamentary elections approach, political parties and movements are consolidating their strategies. The Studentski pokret (Student Movement) has emerged as a focal point for opposition coordination, officially launching its campaign with the registration of a citizens' group named ‘Studentska lista – Studenti pobeđuju’ (Student List – Students Win). This group includes 14 initial signatories, such as various university professors, and reportedly includes approximately 250 candidates, primarily composed of experts and academics.

The campaign officially commenced with a large-scale gathering in Novi Sad, a city chosen for its symbolic connection to the November 2024 railway station canopy collapse that killed 16 people. Student representatives framed the upcoming elections as a choice between ‘Serbia or the mafia’, aiming to address systemic corruption, institutional failures, and the lack of accountability regarding recent national tragedies. To secure candidacy, the movement intends to conduct a 45-day door-to-door campaign to gather the 10,000 required signatures once the Republic Electoral Commission releases official forms.

Several opposition groups have decided not to run independently, opting instead to support the student-led list. The Democratic Party (DS) has endorsed the students, framing a vote for them as a vote against the current regime. The Movement of Free Citizens (PSG) has also pledged support, though leader Pavle Grbović noted this backing is not unconditional and depends on the group maintaining alignment with ‘European values’. Other groups joining this support include Pokret Kreni-Promeni, Zeleno-levi front (ZLF), Dveri, and the ProGlas organization. Additionally, groups such as PODES and ‘Nišlije da se pitaju’ have pledged support, citing patriotic reasons. Meanwhile, the Democratic Party has raised concerns regarding the registration of other groups with similar names, alleging they are attempts by the ruling party to confuse voters.
