Delaware Governor signs energy consumer protection laws

Delaware Governor Matt Meyer has signed a package of energy consumer protection bills designed to mitigate rising utility costs for residents and small businesses. The legislation specifically targets the impact of large-scale energy users, such as data centers, on the state's power grid and consumer rates.

The new laws require data centers and other high-capacity energy users to cover their own infrastructure costs rather than passing those expenses on to the general public. According to Governor Meyer, the measures aim to ensure that working people, seniors, and small businesses do not subsidize the energy needs of wealthy corporations.

Senator Stephanie Hansen, chair of the Senate Environment, Energy & Transportation Committee, noted that the legislation seeks to balance the needs of ratepayers with long-term energy reliability. The package is part of a broader effort by state lawmakers to address energy policy challenges posed by the growing prominence of energy-intensive technology sectors.
