Delft demonstrations occur over proposed asylum seeker center

Protests took place in Delft on Saturday, October 24, regarding the establishment of a new asylum seeker center (AZC) intended to house 350 people. The demonstrations featured opposing groups: Delft Solidair, which organized an anti-fascist manifestation to support refugees, and groups including Defend Delft and Zwart Blok, who opposed the facility.

The Council of Churches in Delft issued a statement expressing support for refugees, emphasizing values of mercy, hospitality, and solidarity. While acknowledging local concerns, the Council expressed worry regarding increasing negative and hateful rhetoric surrounding the arrival of asylum seekers. Currently, approximately 430 asylum seekers are being housed in two temporary locations in the city.

Speakers at the pro-refugee manifestation addressed broader themes of rising fascism and the importance of climate justice and housing rights, stating that “finding a scapegoat does not lead to better housing.”
