Dutch protests against asylum seeker facilities
Overview
Protests have emerged in various Dutch municipalities regarding the housing and arrival of asylum seekers. In Opheusden, approximately 150 demonstrators gathered at the town hall to oppose the arrival of asylum seekers. This event followed a violent incident on September 17 involving property damage and attacks on police, which led authorities to impose fines between 5,000 and 15,000 euros on those involved in unrest.
In Delft, approximately 200 people demonstrated on October 24 against the planned establishment of an asylum seeker center (AZC) at Sportpark Brasserskade, a site intended to house 350 people for fifteen years. The demonstrations involved opposing groups: ‘Defend Delft’ and ‘Zwart Blok’, who organized against the facility, and ‘Delft Solidair’, which held a counter-demonstration to support refugees and oppose discrimination. To maintain order, the municipality established separate demonstration zones on the Markt, supported by a significant police presence including eight riot police vehicles.
While the atmosphere remained generally peaceful, verbal insults were exchanged and two individuals were arrested near Delft station for violating identification laws and for insult. The Council of Churches in Delft issued a statement supporting refugees and expressing concern regarding ‘increasing negative and hateful rhetoric’ surrounding the arrivals. Speakers at the pro-refugee manifestation also addressed themes of rising fascism, noting that ‘finding a scapegoat does not lead to better housing.’ Currently, approximately 430 asylum seekers are being housed in two temporary locations within Delft.
