Delft protests erupt over planned asylum seeker center
Approximately 200 demonstrators gathered in Delft on Saturday to protest the planned establishment of a new asylum seeker center (AZC) at Sportpark Brasserskade. The demonstrations were split between two opposing groups: Defend Delft, which organized protests against the facility, and Delft Solidair, which held a counter-demonstration to support refugees and oppose discrimination.
The municipality established separate demonstration zones on the Markt to keep the groups apart, supported by a significant police presence including eight riot police vehicles. While the atmosphere was described as generally peaceful, verbal insults were exchanged between the groups. Two individuals were arrested near Delft station for violating identification laws and for insult.
The controversy follows a city government decision to designate the Brasserskade site for the center, which is intended to house 350 asylum seekers for a period of fifteen years. The facility is expected to open by the end of 2028. Local sports clubs have expressed objections to the use of the sports park for this purpose.
