Delhi Court Rejects Bail for Doctor in NEET Paper Leak Case
A Delhi court denied bail to Dr. Manoj Bhagwanrao Shirure, labelling him an "active conspirator" in the alleged NEET‑UG 2026 paper‑leak network. The bench said CBI material showed he sourced candidates for the leak and received ₹5 lakh, which was recovered and allegedly concealed. The court noted the scandal caused losses of several crores to the government and eroded trust among millions of exam takers.
The government has established a special Fast‑Track Court under the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Act, 2024 to try all paper‑leak offences. The court is hearing bail pleas of other accused and is set to hear further cases after an initial hearing was postponed.
Separately, a 19‑year‑old student, Ankita Sangale, died by suicide in Maharashtra after scoring 166 marks in a NEET re‑examination. Police recovered a handwritten note in which she apologised to her family for not meeting expectations. Her death adds to a series of student suicides linked to the exam’s upheaval.
Delhi police have registered 15 FIRs against protesters over related violence and are awaiting official direction before withdrawing them. Meanwhile, the Centre is preparing an amendment to the Public Examinations Act that would increase penalties for paper‑leak offences, with proposals for longer sentences and larger fines.
