Delhi Court Denies Umar Khalid's Interim Bail Request
The Additional Sessions Judge at Delhi's Karkardooma Courts rejected student activist Umar Khalid's application for 15 days of interim bail. Khalid sought release to attend the Chehlum ceremony of his late uncle and to care for his mother ahead of a minor surgery.
The judge ruled that the uncle was not a close family member and that the mother's surgery was simple, with other relatives able to provide care. Consequently, the court found no compelling reason to grant bail. Khalid has remained in judicial custody since September 2020 under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act for alleged involvement in the 2020 Delhi riots and related conspiracy charges. Earlier interim bails had been granted in 2022, 2024 and 2025, but the Supreme Court also dismissed recent bail pleas, upholding the statutory bar under the UAPA.
