Delhi Court Rejects Bail for Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in 2020 Riots Case

The Delhi Additional Sessions Court, presided over by Judge Sameer Bazpay, dismissed the bail applications of social activists Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy case. Their plea was denied despite arguments that they qualify for bail under existing legal provisions.

The decision aligns with a prior order from the Supreme Court that also refused bail to the two activists. The court noted that a review of the Supreme Court’s directive is required before any further consideration of their release. Other co‑accused in the case have already been granted bail, but the proceedings against Khalid and Imam remain pending. The case stems from the 2020 riots that left 53 people dead and more than 700 injured.
