Delhi Development Authority approves Master Plan 2047
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved the Master Plan for Delhi 2047 (MPD-2047), a new statutory urban planning framework designed to accommodate an estimated population of 3.2 crore by 2047. The plan has been forwarded to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for final notification.
Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav has criticized the delayed approval, alleging the plan favors the builder lobby by prioritizing high-density development and increased Floor Area Ratio (FAR) without sufficient upgrades to civic infrastructure. Yadav expressed concerns that the plan fails to adequately address shrinking green cover, air and water pollution, inadequate water supply, and worsening traffic congestion.
Historically, there has been a significant gap between Delhi’s master plan visions and actual implementation. While previous plans have been comprehensive, urban growth has often outpaced infrastructure development, with major improvements frequently occurring only during periods of exceptional urgency, such as the 1972 Asian Trade Fair and the 1982 Asian Games.
