Delhi Master Plan 2047 approval and criticism
Overview
The Delhi Development Authority (DDA) has approved the Delhi Master Plan 2047 (MPD-2047), a long-term urban planning framework intended to manage a projected population of 3.2 crore. Aligned with the central government’s ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision, the plan focuses on housing, economic growth, mobility, infrastructure, and environmental sustainability. The DDA also approved policies for the redevelopment of structurally deficient two-storey residential units and land-use changes for specific metro depots.
The plan has been forwarded to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for final notification. However, the approval has faced criticism from Delhi Congress president Devender Yadav, who alleges the plan favors the builder lobby by prioritizing high-density development without sufficient civic infrastructure upgrades. Concerns were raised regarding the plan’s ability to address air and water pollution, shrinking green cover, and traffic congestion.
