Delhi fire kills 21, authorities order hotel inspections

A fire erupted on 4 June in a hotel in Malviya Nagar, New Delhi, killing 21 people. The incident prompted officials to shut down a nearby hotel and to issue notices to all hotels under the Revenue Department’s jurisdiction for inspection.

Revenue Department officer Mohammad Shameem said inspections are underway to determine whether any commercial activities were being conducted illegally. Uttar Pradesh minister Suresh Khanna expressed condolences, and Shahdara South zone chairman Ram Kishor Sharma urged stricter licensing checks for hotels, OYO properties and guest houses. A Nepali patient staying at the nearby Green Resort noted that all hotels in the line have been closed pending the investigations.
