India deploys Kanda Express to stabilize rising onion prices
The Indian government has launched a targeted intervention to combat surging onion prices, which have seen significant year-on-year increases. To stabilize the market and provide relief to consumers, the Centre is releasing buffer stocks through a specialized transport initiative known as the ‘Kanda Express’.
This special train service is transporting hundreds of tonnes of onions from Nasik, Maharashtra, to major consumption hubs. In Delhi, the government will sell subsidized onions at Rs 35 per kg through Nafed, NCCF, and Kendriya Bhandar stores. Other major cities receiving supplies via dedicated railway rakes include Chennai, Ernakulam, Madurai, and Guwahati.
Retail prices have faced upward pressure due to supply chain disruptions and weather-related impacts on crops in Maharashtra. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs is monitoring the situation closely to prevent hoarding and ensure smooth distribution. The government's strategy involves a hybrid model of railway and road transport to reach various regional markets and mitigate seasonal price volatility ahead of the festive and wedding seasons.
