According to the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, improved supply has led to a “broad-based moderation in prices” across major markets. In Maharashtra, the weighted average mandi price fell by nearly 13 per cent, dropping from approximately Rs 4,030 per quintal on September 16 to about Rs 3,475 per quintal by October 3.
However, regional disparities persist. In Assam, retail prices remain high, averaging around Rs 60 per kg, as subsidized supplies have been insufficient to meet festival demand. In Tamil Nadu, the government has introduced a Rs 2 per kg incentive for ration shop workers to facilitate the distribution of procured onions.
