Satya Niketan building collapse triggers legal action and Delhi infrastructure reforms
Following the collapse of a five-storey building in Satya Niketan that killed seven people, including five students, Delhi authorities have initiated several major responses. In legal developments, the Patiala House Court rejected the anticipatory bail plea of advocate and PG operator Shubham Tyagi, noting he had suppressed rent agreements. Tyagi later surrendered and was placed in two-day police custody to assist in investigations into the building's management and potential conspiracy.
In response to the tragedy, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has ordered intensive inspections of paying guest (PG) accommodations and strict enforcement of building height regulations. Addressing the underlying student housing shortage, Delhi University announced a significant expansion of its residential infrastructure. The university aims to increase its combined hostel capacity to 12,754 seats through several new construction projects, including a 1,450-seat hostel and a women's residential complex.
