Delhi Government launches free rooftop solar scheme for households

The Delhi government has launched a new version of the Delhi Solar Energy Policy to promote clean energy across the capital. Under this initiative, the government will install 3 kW capacity rooftop solar systems at no upfront cost for domestic consumers with an average monthly electricity consumption of up to 400 units. The plan aims to cover approximately 2.3 million households.

To eliminate the financial burden on citizens, the Delhi government will provide a capital subsidy of ₹78,000, matching the subsidy provided by the central government. The state will also cover any remaining gap between the total installation cost and the combined subsidies. Unlike previous systems where consumers had to pay upfront and wait for subsidies, this policy provides immediate financial support.

Furthermore, the government will cover the operation and maintenance of these solar systems for the first five years. Consumers can also benefit financially by exporting excess electricity back to the power grid. For instance, a 3 kW system producing an average of 300 units monthly could allow a family consuming 200 units to earn approximately ₹950 per month from the surplus. Additionally, consumers in the 0 to 200 unit consumption bracket may receive energy-saving incentives of ₹3 per unit on 50 percent of their saved electricity.
