Delhi Government Launches Large-Scale Crackdown on Illegal Construction
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta of Delhi ordered a zero‑tolerance drive against unauthorised building work, encroachments and fire‑safety violations. Multiple agencies – the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, the Delhi Development Authority and the Revenue Department – have been mobilised to inspect properties, issue notices, seal sites and demolish illegal structures.
In the first six days of the operation, the MCD demolished 94 illegal buildings and sealed 114 others after inspecting 124 properties across the city. The DDA has also strengthened its Flying Squad and Quick‑Response Teams, and officials say architects responsible for serious breaches may be removed from approved panels and black‑listed.
The government is considering a third‑party insurance framework that would cover buildings, guest houses, nursing homes and other public‑use establishments only if they meet structural and safety standards. A digital tracking system for fire‑department response is also being developed to improve transparency and efficiency.
