Delhi government to build hostels for 10,000 students

The Delhi government has announced plans to construct hostel facilities for 10,000 students to address the growing demand for safe and affordable accommodation. Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the initiative aims to support students from various colleges and universities across the city, regardless of whether the institutions are state-run.

The decision follows a recent tragedy in Satya Niketan, where the collapse of a five-storey paying guest (PG) accommodation resulted in seven deaths, including five students. This incident has intensified scrutiny regarding the safety and living conditions of students residing in private accommodations.

To accelerate development, the government may utilize public-private partnership (PPP) models and will conduct surveys to identify colleges with sufficient land for construction. The Chief Minister emphasized that the government's responsibility will extend beyond building structures to ensuring the safety, comfort, and essential needs of the students.
