Delhi High Court dismisses challenge to DUSU election results
The Delhi High Court has dismissed a petition challenging the results of the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections. The plea was filed by Vijay Shankar Meena, a candidate from the National Students' Union of India (NSUI), who alleged electoral malpractice and partisan campaigning by university officials in favor of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP).
Meena sought to quash the results declared on September 19, in which ABVP candidate Yash Dabas was elected President. The petitioner provided photographs and videos purportedly showing professors and election officers celebrating the ABVP victory, arguing this demonstrated bias. However, Justice Saurabh Banerjee ruled that the evidence was insufficient, noting that the photographs were undated and did not prove that the individuals were canvassing during the election period.
The Court observed that taking photographs with candidates after the declaration of results does not constitute illegal canvassing under the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines. Additionally, the Court noted that some of the submitted material was described as AI-generated content. While the petition was dismissed, representatives for Delhi University stated that a separate representation made by the petitioner would be decided as expeditiously as possible.
