Delhi High Court hears Sharjeel Imam's bail plea in 2020 riots case

The Delhi High Court issued a notice to the police on July 17, seeking a response to Sharjeel Imam’s bail application in the UAPA‑registered conspiracy case stemming from the 2020 North‑East Delhi riots.

The Division Bench of Justices Prathiba M. Singh and Vikas Mahajan noted that the trial has stalled, with charges still unframed after more than six months since the Supreme Court’s January 2026 judgment rejecting an earlier bail plea. They scheduled further hearing for August 27, while the court also considered recent Supreme Court pronouncements granting interim bail to co‑accused and urging a change in circumstances.

Imam has been in custody since his 2020 arrest and, together with co‑accused Umar Khalid, continues to challenge the Karkardooma Sessions Court’s July 4 rejection of regular bail.
