Sonam Wangchuk shifted to Medanta Hospital after Delhi High Court order

Educator, innovator and climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, who has been on a hunger strike for about 24 days protesting police action on students, was transferred from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on 21 July 2026. The Delhi High Court, in a division‑bench order, directed that he be shifted immediately to the private hospital of his choice. The court also instructed Medanta’s director to form a panel of doctors to oversee his treatment.

A health bulletin from Safdarjung Hospital recorded that Wangchuk was discharged at 06:40 pm, with his vital parameters described as stable. However, his medical condition includes pancytopenia and a low serum potassium level of 3.4 mEq/L. All relevant medical records and investigation reports were handed over to the Medanta team to ensure continuity of care. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta confirmed that the Centre had no objection to the transfer.

Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, said he will continue his hunger strike until Parliament takes cognisance of the alleged “brutal” police action on protestors during the ‘Sansad Chalo’ march.
