Exam fraud protests, minister resignation, Jharkhand sit-in
Overview
The 2024 NEET-UG paper-leak protests, led by the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), culminated in Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation on 25 July. Following violent demonstrations in Delhi, police compiled dossiers on 216 individuals. In response, Prime Minister Narendra Modi fast-tracked the Public Examination (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill 2026, while the CBI filed charge sheets against 13 individuals. To prevent future leaks, the government announced a transition to computer-based NEET examinations. Following his resignation, Pradhan addressed the public in Odisha, claiming his decision was intended to prevent the exploitation of student grievances and attempts to “mislead” Gen Z. He further accused political opponents of involving youth in protests. Simultaneously, student unrest in Jharkhand regarding the 14th JPSC and JSSC examinations has intensified. Student leader Devendra Nath Mahato has launched an indefinite hunger strike, demanding the cancellation of the 14th JPSC Preliminary exam and a CBI probe into the private agency TSR Data Processing Private Limited. In response to these demands, Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced in the State Assembly that the government will not hesitate to cancel the 14th JPSC Preliminary exam and two backlog exams if investigations confirm irregularities. To improve transparency, the state plans to seek expertise from institutions like IIT and IIM and has launched the ‘Students Voice with Students’ campaign to gather feedback on examination reforms. However, protesters continue to demand a full CBI inquiry into alleged paper tampering and systemic corruption. Following Pradhan’s departure, Pralhad Joshi succeeded him as Education Minister. The Supreme Court of India has scheduled a hearing for 6 August to examine the paper-handling process. The government has also established a high-powered task force, chaired by Nandan Nilekani, to review the shift to computer-based testing.
