NEET leak fallout: protests, hunger strike, quota petition,

Overview

The NEET‑UG 2026 re‑test held on 21 June has drawn renewed scrutiny. The National Testing Agency released scanned answer sheets on 13 July, with objections accepted until 15 July; the Supreme Court dismissed a challenge to the retest on 15 July and results are expected by 20 July.

Education reformer Sonam Wangchuk’s indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar, begun on 28 June, entered its 20th day by mid‑July. He has lost about 9 kg and doctors warn of organ‑failure risk. The Delhi High Court now orders daily medical monitoring and any intervention advised by government doctors. Politicians including Arvind Kejriwal, Supriya Sule and Pawan Khera have visited the site, while actors Atul Kulkarni, Samay Raina and Sonakshi Sinha voiced support. A “Chalo Sansad” march organised by the Cockroach Janata Party is slated for 20 July.

Senior‑citizen activist Ashok Bahar filed a Lucknow High Court petition demanding a 1 % reservation for seniors in medical college admissions, citing existing quotas for persons with disabilities and ex‑service members. Former Delhi chief minister Aravind Kejriwal reiterated calls to remove Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and install Wangchuk.

The Central Bureau of Investigation disclosed that Latur coaching‑centre owner Shivraj Motegaonkar allegedly paid Rs 5 lakh to a former NTA panelist for the chemistry paper, matching 111 of 136 handwritten questions recovered from his phone. Judicial custody of the 13 accused has been extended to 24 July.

Mental‑health concerns persist: an 18‑year‑old NEET aspirant in Faridabad died by suicide after a low‑score estimate from the answer key, adding to the tragic toll of the crisis. The same day, a 15‑year‑old girl was murdered in Ghaziabad, highlighting broader safety issues for youth.
