India reports H1N1 influenza surge with rising cases in Delhi
India is experiencing a surge in H1N1 influenza cases, particularly in Delhi and North India. Delhi has reported over 2,300 cases this year, a significant increase compared to the same period last year. In response, the Delhi government has placed 35 hospitals under special surveillance and issued advisories to schools to monitor students for symptoms like fever and cough.
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has clarified that the current outbreak is caused by seasonal influenza strains already in circulation and is not a new or more virulent mutation. ICMR Director-General Rajiv Bahl noted that H1N1 is the dominant respiratory pathogen in India, accounting for nearly 98% of tested Influenza A cases. While most cases are mild, health officials advise that high-risk groups, including the elderly, young children, and those with underlying conditions, should consider vaccination.
In Haryana, the government has mandated 100% influenza testing for all patients presenting with Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). Meanwhile, medical facilities like LNJP Hospital in Delhi have prepared contingency plans, including the establishment of dedicated isolation wards and the capacity to scale up to 70 beds if admissions surge.
