H1N1 influenza surge and fatalities in multiple Indian state

Overview

As of early September 2026, India continues to face a seasonal surge in H1N1 influenza (swine flu) cases across multiple states, including Delhi, Karnataka, Haryana, Jharkhand, Himachal Pradesh, Maharashtra, and West Bengal. In the Delhi-NCR region, authorities are responding to the outbreak with intensified public health measures. By late August, the Delhi state government recorded 2,729 H1N1 cases out of 3,736 total influenza A and B cases. To mitigate health risks, Delhi Health Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh has instructed the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the NDMC, and the Delhi Cantonment to accelerate anti-larval operations and intensive fogging in public spaces. The MCD has also strengthened city-wide surveillance, targeting mosquito breeding sites at construction sites, schools, and parks. While H1N1 cases rise, MCD data indicates dengue cases in Delhi have seen a 46 per cent decrease compared to the same period last year. Northern and southern regions are also reporting significant activity. In Himachal Pradesh, a 64-year-old patient with pneumonia died in Shimla on August 29, while Uttarakhand has reported 105 H1N1 cases and five deaths. In Hyderabad, medical professionals have noted a surge in patients presenting with high-grade fevers between 104°F and 105°F, accompanied by severe body aches and fatigue. While many patients initially suspect dengue, doctors at Virinchi Hospital have identified H1N1 as a primary contributing factor, noting that patients with underlying conditions like diabetes are particularly vulnerable. By September 9, new surges have been reported in Nashik and Rampur. In Nashik, 66 new cases were reported within a 10-day period, with three deaths recorded over the past month. The Nashik Municipal Corporation has prepared 20 dedicated beds across two hospitals to manage the pressure on healthcare systems. In Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, four confirmed cases have been identified, including a mother, her one-year-old daughter, and a 68-year-old man.
