Delhi Malviya Nagar hotel fire kills 21, injures dozens

A fire broke out on the morning of June 3, 2026, at the Flourish Stay B&B hotel in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar neighbourhood. The blaze started in a basement restaurant, reportedly after an electric stove exploded, and spread rapidly to the upper floors.

Emergency services, local residents and police rescued more than 40 people, but 21 persons died, including a large number of foreign nationals from West Asian and African countries. Over 30 others were injured and taken to hospitals for treatment.

Investigations have revealed that the hotel was operating far beyond its licensed capacity – it held a licence for only six rooms under the B&B category, yet about 25 rooms, some in the basement, were in use. Authorities have launched a probe into licensing violations and fire‑safety compliance.

Delhi’s chief minister Rekha Gupta expressed condolence, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced compensation of ₹200,000 for the families of the deceased and ₹50 for each injured person. The incident has prompted calls for stricter enforcement of building and fire‑safety codes.
