Delhi Master Plan 2047 unveiled to drive urban growth

The Delhi Master Plan 2047 has been officially unveiled, providing a long-term roadmap for the capital's urban development to accommodate a projected population of 3.2 crore residents. A central pillar of the plan is the construction of 30 to 40 lakh new housing units, with a significant emphasis on affordable housing and urban regeneration through land pooling and densification.

Infrastructure and mobility are set for major upgrades, including the expansion of the metro network to 695 km and the implementation of Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) to link residential areas with transport hubs. The plan also introduces novel transportation concepts such as air taxis, air pods, and inland waterways. Additionally, a strategic link is proposed to connect Delhi to the Noida International Airport at Jewar.

To address environmental challenges, the plan focuses on pollution control, expanding green spaces, and promoting renewable energy. This includes encouraging solar PV installations on large government and institutional buildings, as well as utilizing canals and drains for solar and hydropower. Urban growth is expected to shift toward a more vertical and compact model, incorporating redevelopment of existing plots and unauthorized colonies to optimize the city's limited land area.
