Delhi municipal corporation seals illegal establishments after deadly fire

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) began sealing and demolishing unauthorised commercial establishments in South Delhi on June 5, following a fire at the Flourish Stay bed‑and‑breakfast in Malviya Nagar that killed 21 people, including 12 foreign nationals.

Four MCD teams of junior and assistant engineers have been deployed to seal at least ten buildings in Hauz Khas Village, Saidulajab and the nearby Hauz Rani area, revoking licences and preparing to write to the Tourism Department to cancel licences of 12 bed‑and‑breakfast facilities. The Delhi government has formed district‑level and subdivision‑level committees, chaired by the district magistrate, to conduct a city‑wide survey of illegal structures, enforce fire‑safety certificates and, if needed, invoke powers under the Disaster Management Act.
