India weather alert: Heavy rain predicted across multiple states
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued widespread weather alerts across India as monsoon activity intensifies. A fresh low-pressure area is expected to form over the north Bay of Bengal near the West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts within the next 24 hours. This system is predicted to trigger heavy to very heavy rainfall across several regions, particularly in Odisha and Chhattisgarh.
In Odisha, an orange warning has been issued for the districts of Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Rayagada, Koraput, and Gajapati, where heavy to very heavy rain is anticipated. Other districts, including Kalahandi, Sundargarh, and Balasore, are under a yellow alert. The state government has increased preparedness, with Special Relief Commissioner Rajesh P Patil instructing districts to remain alert. Floodwaters continue to affect hundreds of villages in districts such as Baleshwar and Jajpur.
In northern India, Delhi-NCR has experienced heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, leading to waterlogging in various areas. Similar weather patterns are expected to continue through the coming days. Additionally, alerts for heavy rain, thunderstorms, and lightning have been issued for several states, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, and parts of West Bengal. In Uttar Pradesh, rising river levels have created flood-like conditions in approximately 13 districts, including Varanasi and Prayagraj.
