Monsoon downpours spark alerts, flooding and traffic jams in Delhi NCR and Mumbai

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Yellow alert for Delhi‑NCR on July 7‑9, forecasting light to moderate rain, thunderstorms and gusty winds. The rains lowered temperatures by 1‑2 °C and caused widespread water‑logging in areas such as Subroto Park, Badarpur and Sadar Bazaar. Heavy downpours created a 8‑10 km traffic jam on the Delhi‑Jaipur NH‑48 in Gurugram after a road cave‑in, prompting the traffic police to advise commuters to use alternative routes and work‑from‑home advisories.

In Mumbai, the IMD placed the city under an Orange alert through July 8, leading to the closure of all schools and colleges, delays on local trains and a overflow of the Vihar lake. Similar Orange alerts were issued for Dehradun, where all schools were shut on July 9. Kerala’s Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad districts also received Orange alerts for very heavy rain. Authorities across the affected states urged residents to avoid travel in water‑logged areas, stay indoors during thunderstorms, and follow official warnings.
