Delhi rainfall surpasses monthly average in first eight days of August

Delhi has experienced extreme monsoon activity, with rainfall in the first eight days of August surpassing the city's monthly average. The Safdarjung Observatory recorded 230.1 mm of rain, exceeding the long-period average of approximately 226.8 mm to 233.1 mm.

On Saturday, the capital recorded its heaviest August day in two years, with Safdarjung receiving 98.7 mm of rain within a 24-hour period. Other areas, such as Ayanagar and Palam, also reported significant totals. The intense downpour has led to widespread waterlogging, severe traffic congestion, and disruptions to daily life across the Delhi-NCR region. In one instance in Deoli, a collapsing boundary wall caused damage to several vehicles.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that while heavy rain intensity may ease after August 9, light to moderate showers are expected to continue intermittently through August 14. On a broader scale, monsoon activity is expected to intensify across central India, affecting states like Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra.
