New Delhi crackdown on CJP protests leads to mass detentions
Authorities in New Delhi implemented a massive security crackdown to prevent a large-scale protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The youth-led movement was demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar following controversies regarding a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists.
Police deployed thousands of personnel, established barricades, and restricted movement by shutting down dozens of metro stations and suspending mobile internet services in central districts. Reports indicate that thousands of individuals were detained, including CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke, leaders Saurav Das and Ashutosh Ranka, and several prominent opposition figures such as Arvind Kejriwal and Mamata Banerjee.
CJP leaders Dipke, Das, and Ranka were later released by an Executive Magistrate on the condition of maintaining peace for one year, supported by a 50,000 rupee bond. While the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dismissed the demonstrations as failed attempts at anarchy, the CJP and opposition leaders have characterized the response as an assault on democratic dissent.
