Delhi security intensifies amid CJP protests
Overview
Security measures in New Delhi have intensified as the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) and student organizations demand the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the cancellation of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The CJP alleges the SIR process removed approximately 130 million names to favor the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The BJP defends the process as a constitutional right intended to remove deceased or duplicate voters.
Authorities have deployed significant personnel, utilizing barricades and drone surveillance. Recent escalations include the detention of several high-ranking Communist Party of India (Marxist) leaders, such as General Secretary MA Baby, Brinda Karat, and former Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar, during demonstrations at Jantar Mantar. The CPI(M) accused the Delhi Police of using excessive force and manhandling protesters, claiming the crackdown creates an atmosphere resembling an ‘undeclared Emergency.’
On October 14, Delhi Police detained CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora ahead of a planned ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ march. While Dipke was released on October 17 after signing a peace bond, legal tensions persist regarding his associates. Ashutosh Ranka and Sourav Das remain in judicial custody after a magistrate ordered five days of detention for alleged repeated violations and for entering Jantar Mantar after it had ceased to be a designated protest venue.
On October 20, CJP chief Abhijeet Dipke announced a suspension of all protests until Diwali, citing the physical assaults and personal hardships faced by activists and their families. Dipke compared the movement to Mahatma Gandhi’s Satyagraha, emphasizing non-violence. Addressing social media criticism regarding the imprisonment of Das and Ranka, Dipke defended the two men, describing them as “better leaders and people than myself” and asserting that the CJP operates through collective decision-making.
