Delhi Parliament protest breaches security; police identify criminal links in nearly 1,000 participants
On July 20, a large protest organized by the Cockroach Janata Party reached within 100 metres of the Parliament of India in Delhi, despite Section 163 security measures and a police‑installed barricade. CCTV footage released later showed demonstrators confronting police with repeated clashes around the parliamentary precinct.
Delhi Police subsequently used facial‑recognition technology, drones and other video evidence to examine 2,873 identified participants. They reported that 989 of those individuals have prior criminal records, including murder, rape, robbery, attempted murder, weapons offences and other serious charges. The police deployed batons and tear‑gas during the protest, and the resulting legal challenges are being heard before the Supreme Court of India.
The incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of security protocols around the nation’s legislative complex and prompted scrutiny of protest policing methods.
