Supreme Court to probe Delhi police force during CJP protests

The Supreme Court of India is establishing a high-powered committee, including retired judges and former law enforcement directors, to investigate allegations of police brutality during a July 20 protest in Delhi. The protest, led by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), involved an estimated 30,000 participants at Jantar Mantar who attempted to march toward Parliament.

Delhi Police have filed counter-affidavits denying the use of excessive force. They assert that the assembly became unlawful after protesters breached barricades, necessitating a graded response from approximately 5,000 personnel. The police maintain they used the “minimum required force” and dismissed claims of using nail-studded lathis, stating that video evidence is selective and incomplete. The police also defended the use of facial recognition technology, stating it was used to identify individuals with known criminal backgrounds rather than for indiscriminate surveillance.

The clashes reportedly resulted in injuries to over 240 police officers and approximately 200 protesters. The investigative committee will also examine allegations of sexual harassment and online victimization of female protesters. The court has indicated it may use its extraordinary powers to consider quashing FIRs against student protesters.
