Thousands of protesters gathered at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi on August 21 to demand reforms to India's caste-based reservation system. Organized under the banner of the Reservation Hatao Andolan and led by NEET aspirant Harsh Dubey, the demonstrators called for affirmative action to be based on economic status rather than caste identity. They also expressed opposition to the University Grants Commission's (UGC) equity regulations and demanded changes to the SC/ST Act, alleging its misuse.

The protest occurred despite Delhi Police enforcing prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the BNSS, which banned assemblies of five or more people. While police had issued a no-objection certificate for a limited protest of 500 people at Ramlila Ground, organizers and many participants rejected the venue change and assembled at Jantar Mantar instead.

In response to the large crowd, Delhi Police and the Rapid Action Force (RAF) deployed heavy security, including barricades and paramilitary forces. More than 50 protesters were detained as the crowd refused to disperse late into the evening. The Reservation Hatao Andolan clarified via social media that the movement is not funded by political parties or foreign agencies.
