Delhi Police registers attempted‑murder FIR over July 20 Parliament protest

On July 20, thousands of demonstrators gathered near the Rail Bhawan roundabout on Rafi Marg, close to India’s Parliament. The police claim the crowd ignored loud‑speaker warnings about prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, broke barricades, and assaulted officers with stones and slippers, allegedly intending to kill them.

An FIR filed on July 25 at Kartavya Path Police Station under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita includes an attempted‑murder charge (Section 109 (1)) plus twelve other offences such as assault on public servants, unlawful assembly, rioting, obstruction of duty, and damage to public and private property. Police reported 129 officers and more than 60 protesters injured, and they resorted to a lathi‑charge and tear‑gas shells to disperse the crowd. The FIR cites damage to government property and private vehicles.

The filing reflects the authorities’ response to the protest’s escalation and underscores the legal consequences for participants.
