Delhi business faces 2,000 crore rupee loss amid electoral roll protests
Political protests in Delhi regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls have caused significant economic disruption, particularly during the start of the festive season. The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) reported that a single day of demonstrations and subsequent police security measures on October 10 resulted in an estimated business loss of 2,000 crore rupees.
The unrest, initiated by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), has impacted over 20 lakh traders across the capital. Major commercial hubs, including Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, and Sadar Bazar, experienced near-total shutdowns. In Khan Market, traders reported that business has reached a standstill, with activity dropping to only 10% to 20% of normal levels due to police barricading and customer fear of potential violence.
In response, the CTI has appealed to all political parties to suspend demonstrations in Delhi until the conclusion of the Diwali festival to protect livelihoods. Additionally, Khan Market traders have urged the Supreme Court to relocate protest sites to the Delhi border to restore market access and prevent further economic damage.
