Delhi electoral roll protests and economic impact

Overview

Protests initiated by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls have caused significant economic disruption in Delhi. On October 10, demonstrations and police security measures led to an estimated business loss of 2,000 crore rupees, impacting approximately 20 lakh traders.

Major commercial hubs such as Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, and Khan Market experienced near-total shutdowns or severe reductions in activity. In Khan Market, business levels reportedly dropped to between 10% and 20% of normal levels due to police barricading and safety concerns.

As of mid-October, the economic strain has intensified during the Navratri and Diwali festive seasons. Traders in major hubs are now reporting daily losses estimated between Rs 100 crore and Rs 250 crore due to the sharp decline in customer footfall.

The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI) has appealed to political parties to suspend demonstrations until the conclusion of the Diwali festival. The CTI has also written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah requesting a prohibition on marches in the capital to protect market stability. Business organizations have approached the judiciary to challenge the timing and location of these demonstrations, arguing that protests should be relocated to designated sites on the city’s outskirts.

These disruptions have extended beyond Delhi, with reports from Bengaluru indicating that stalled cloth shipments to the capital are hindering the ability to fulfill orders in other regions. Merchants have expressed concern that the revenue generated during this three-month period is vital for sustaining their businesses for the remainder of the year.
