Delhi reports sharp rise in H1N1 influenza cases during monsoon

Delhi is experiencing a significant surge in H1N1 influenza, commonly known as swine flu, during the current monsoon season. Confirmed cases in the capital reached 1,449 as of August 12, representing a more than sixfold increase compared to the 229 cases reported during the same period last year.

Medical professionals, including Dr. Neeraj Nischal, a Professor of Medicine at AIIMS Delhi, have warned of a rise in various monsoon-related illnesses, such as influenza, viral fevers, and respiratory infections. Doctors note that symptoms like fever, cough, sore throat, and fatigue often overlap between different viral and bacterial infections, making self-diagnosis difficult.

Healthcare providers are urging caution, particularly for vulnerable populations including the elderly and individuals with pre-existing conditions such as asthma or COPD. Physicians emphasize the importance of monitoring for severe symptoms, such as breathing difficulties, to distinguish serious influenza cases from ordinary seasonal infections.
