Delhi declares September 11 holiday for BRICS Summit
In preparation for the 18th BRICS Leaders' Summit, authorities in Delhi have announced a public holiday for September 11, 2026. The summit is scheduled to take place at Bharat Mandapam from September 11 to 13, 2026.
Central government offices and Delhi government-controlled entities, including autonomous bodies and public sector undertakings, will remain closed on Friday, September 11. This holiday, combined with the following weekend, creates a three-day break intended to reduce traffic congestion and facilitate the movement of diplomatic motorcades. While government offices are closed, the holiday does not automatically apply to private companies or schools.
The summit will host approximately 30 leaders from BRICS member and partner nations, alongside heads of international organizations. India, which assumed the BRICS presidency on January 1, 2026, is hosting the event as part of its leadership term.
To ensure readiness, the Delhi government is conducting inspections of key routes, specifically the path between Bharat Mandapam and Indira Gandhi International Airport. These inspections involve multiple agencies, including the PWD, Delhi Police, and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi, to address infrastructure, cleanliness, and security arrangements.
