Delhi University Students’ Union elections enter vote counting phase
The 2026 Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) elections concluded with vote counting underway on Saturday, September 19. Polling took place on Friday across 52 centers, recording a 40.46 per cent voter turnout, the highest in three years. The election featured a primary contest between the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) for four central posts: President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary.
Security was heavily reinforced throughout the process, with over 2,000 police and paramilitary personnel deployed across the North and South campuses. Authorities utilized drones, CCTV, and body-worn cameras to monitor the proceedings. The election followed recent periods of campus violence and student protests regarding infrastructure and exam irregularities.
The Delhi High Court has intervened following reports of campaign violations and hooliganism. A bench led by Chief Justice D. K. Upadhyaya has banned all victory processions within the university campus, streets, and hostels. Additionally, the court issued notices to all 140 candidates and various student organizations, questioning why collective electoral damages should not be imposed for alleged violations of the Lyngdoh Committee recommendations.
