Delta Flight 5860 Emergency Lands in Portland, Maine

Delta Air Lines Flight 5860, operating from Portland International Jetport to LaGuardia Airport, declared an emergency shortly after takeoff on Saturday when a cockpit smoke sensor was triggered. The aircraft returned to the Portland Jetport and landed safely, with all 78 occupants – 74 passengers and four crew members – unharmed.

Investigators determined the sensor activation was caused by an electrical issue, not actual smoke. The plane was taxied to the gate, passengers were deplaned via a boarding bridge and will be transferred to a replacement aircraft to continue to New York. Airport rescue services responded, and the incident caused no injuries or delays beyond the immediate diversion.
