Smoke-related airline emergency landings

Overview

In late July 2026 two separate flights experienced smoke‑related emergencies that led to unscheduled landings in Maine.

The crew declared a general emergency (code 7700), descended more than 22,000 feet and landed safely at Bangor International Airport in Maine. No fire was found and all 208 passengers and crew were unharmed. The airline identified a damaged headphone‑charging power‑bank wedged in a seat as the source and reiterated its prohibition on such devices. The U.S. FAA opened an investigation.

The aircraft had suffered a left‑hand Rolls‑Royce Trent engine failure during a rejected take‑off at Delhi in April 2026, which caused wheel and brake smoke and injured six people. It was returned to service in June before the July smoke incidents, highlighting the importance of rapid response to smoke detections and strict baggage regulations.
