Delta Governor Oborevwori Announces ₦2 million Grants for Xenophobia Returnees

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori approved a comprehensive welfare package for Deltans who returned from South Africa after recent xenophobic attacks. The package provides a ₦2 million grant to each affected family and monthly stipends of ₦200,000 per individual returnee and ₦300,000 per family, beginning in August 2026 and continuing until the end of the governor’s first tenure on 29 May 2027.

The governor, represented by Chief of Staff Hon. Johnson Erijo, condemned the attacks as a violation of human dignity and praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for facilitating the safe evacuation of Nigerians from South Africa. Additional measures include free medical screening for all returnees at state‑owned health facilities and trauma counselling and psychosocial support through the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Services. Commissioner for Special Duties Hon. Ejiro Etacherure also affirmed the state’s commitment to assisting the returnees and highlighted the collaborative effort between federal and state authorities.
