NDLEA dismantles Nigerian-Mexican methamphetamine cartel in Enugu

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled a transnational Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in the Eziama community of Enugu State, Nigeria. The operation uncovered a facility equipped with improvised reactors and distillation apparatus capable of commercial-scale production.

Two key suspects, Chukwu Obumneme Christopher (alias Brown) and Chukwu Georginus Monday (alias George), have been arraigned on charges including conspiracy and the financing of a drug trafficking organization. A notorious member of a Mexican drug cartel, Rodriguez Villanueva, has been named in the charges but remains at large. The trial is scheduled to begin on October 21, 2026.

In response to rising substance abuse, various regional governments are launching preventative measures. In Liberia, the Ministry of Health has initiated a nationwide awareness campaign and specialized training for health workers. In Nigeria, Delta State and Edo State have implemented student-focused sensitization programs and marathons to promote drug-free lifestyles.
