NDLEA drug abuse prevention and enforcement efforts

Overview

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has initiated several programs in Nigeria to combat substance abuse through professional development and public awareness.

In late August, the NDLEA launched a nationwide training program at its academy in Jos to standardize drug treatment and rehabilitation services. The initiative, led by the Directorate of Counseling, Treatment and Rehabilitation, aims to equip over 100 counselors with modern therapeutic tools to address complex substance use disorders and mental health issues while ensuring professional ethics and data management.

Following this, the NDLEA partnered with the Delta State government to launch the second phase of the ‘Drug-Free Delta Campaign’ in Asaba. This sensitization effort focuses on students at various secondary schools, utilizing a combination of social orientation and legal education to prevent addiction and crime among youth.

In September 2026, the agency’s focus expanded to interdicting large-scale production. The NDLEA dismantled a transnational Nigerian-Mexican drug cartel operating a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory in the Eziama community of Enugu State. The facility contained improvised reactors and distillation apparatus capable of commercial-scale production.

Two suspects, Chukwu Obumneme Christopher (alias Brown) and Chukwu Georginus Monday (alias George), were arraigned on charges including conspiracy and the financing of a drug trafficking organization. While a notorious member of a Mexican drug cartel, Rodriguez Villanueva, has been named in the charges, he remains at large. The trial is scheduled to commence on October 21, 2026.
