Delta State investigates death of education official Unity Adeda

The death of Unity Adeda, a Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education, has triggered significant unrest and government action in Delta State, Nigeria. Following an alleged altercation at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu, Adeda died, leading to accusations that he was assaulted by the Commissioner’s aides.

In response to the incident, the Delta State Government has constituted an eight-member Administrative Panel of Inquiry, chaired by Mrs. Charity Ehimen, to investigate the circumstances of the death. The panel has been given two weeks to submit its findings. Simultaneously, the Delta State Police Command has launched a criminal investigation. One suspect, Lucky Adoh, has been arrested, while a manhunt is underway for Enos Attah and Oputa Okestine.

While Commissioner Ashibogwu has denied ordering any assault and claimed the deceased was the aggressor, the deceased’s family has provided a conflicting account, alleging he was brutally beaten. The incident initially prompted the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) to declare an indefinite strike. However, following meetings with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the establishment of the inquiry panel, organized labour has suspended the strike and directed workers to resume duties.
